Writer Rumer Godden says “Everyone is a house with four rooms: Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person.” There are all kinds of ideas and theories about the dimensions of personal growth. Below are four for you to consider on your own journey towards meaningful growth.
Discipline – To create change in our lives, we need to consistently focus on what we want. What am I currently not doing that, if I were doing, would open myself up to living my best life? What am I currently doing that, if eliminated, would open myself up more to living my best life?
Detachment – Practice the art of detached observation. Let go of automatic defenses and patterns. People who possess emotional and mental detachment can be very active and caring, though they accept calmly whatever happens. Detachment holds no judgement. Accept the good and the bad equally as a pathway towards inner balance and peace.
Discernment – Discernment is the ability to grasp, comprehend, and evaluate clearly. Be silent and listen to your own inner voice that whispers to you what is really true and what is not. Seek to discern the higher from the lower. What is self-serving and what is soul-inspired? As we grow in experience, our ability to discern usually grows stronger, providing us with insight that propels us toward greater wisdom.
Dharma – This is an East Indian word meaning “living your unique purpose.” How do you find meaning and fulfillment in ways that are natural to you? How do you best serve and contribute to the world? Whatever you do that leads you to inner fulfillment and to a connected spirit may be considered Dharma. The source of happiness must lie within the mind, not in external conditions. If our mind is pure and peaceful we shall be happy, regardless of our external circumstances.
